Project Overview

This video is a work produced for the overseas fan collaboration project HONKAI: STAR RAIL Chorus Battle (HSRCB).

For me, this project was a challenge in many ways.

First of all, it was my first time joining an overseas collaboration. But more importantly, I wanted to attempt something unprecedented: telling a story using only standing illustrations. From the very beginning, I approached it with both curiosity—“How far can I actually push this?”—and with an experimental spirit.

Goals and design intent

For this project, I set myself the following goals :

  1. Tell a story using only standing illustrations

Usually, videos that utilize standing illustrations are focused on simply expressing the mood of the music, or just looking pretty and cool. But I wanted to push the envelope a little bit, to move away from "show and tell" and try to tell a storywith just the standing illustrations. It was more of an unprecedented experiment that had never been done before. I knew it wouldn't be easy, but that's exactly why I wanted to try it.

  2. Drawing heavily on elements of Honkai: Star Rail

The collaboration was a chorus battle themed around the game Honkai : Star Rail. Naturally, the video had to incorporate the game's world and setting. I hadn't played the game myself, but I tried to make up for it with research. I wanted to understand the context of the world and characters as much as possible and actively incorporate them into the video.

  3. Making active use of 3D

I had used Blender in my previous work, but this time I wanted to take it a step further, creating more colorful and three-dimensional scenes of explosions, destruction, and construction. I also wanted to try a lot of new things technically, so 3D was definitely a challenge.

  4. Attempting a genre fusion

Beyond just combining 3D and 2D motion graphics, we also wanted to actively bring in compositing and typography, especially in the chorus, to maximize the density and energy of the video by using typography as an important visual element.

  5. My first international collaboration

This was my very first collaboration in the overseas doujin scene(?). Beyond just producing a final output, I wanted to make my name known, even just a little, within the international community. At the same time, I wanted to experience overcoming linguistic and cultural barriers during the collaboration process.
